she used to shrink
inside her own skin
wore doubt like a coat
stitched too thin
but broken glass
still reflects the light
and jagged edges
sharpen the fight
now she stands
where my fears once laid
building worth
from the cracks they made
she is gold in the dirt
still gleaming unseen
an unfinished masterpiece
bold and serene

he doesn’t need to see the world
to understand it
the rhythm of the streets
tells him everything he needs to know
he feels the sun
not through his eyes
but in the warmth on his skin
the way the morning air shifts
when the day begins
his fingers dance across the keys
or the strings or the frets
like he’s tracing the face of something familiar
something he’s always known
music is his sight
his way of painting the world
without ever seeing it
people watch him play
some with pity, some with awe
but he doesn’t care for their looks
because when he plays
he is free
floating somewhere beyond
what sight could ever give him
he listens to the rain
like it’s whispering a melody
he hears the laughter of strangers
like a song waiting to be written
he doesn’t need eyes
when he has music
and music has always seen him

too black for the white kids
but their parents say
i'm too white for the blacks
it's sad and dividing
like they're making us walk
on opposite side of train tracks
they talk about no racism no more
i think it's all talk and lies
they don't talk about invasions on shore
and killing the black man where he lies
how do you steal babies from parents
and think that's okay?
how do you rape and enslave women
the brutality began
in botany bay

the women of my lifetime
are women of a lifeline
they teach me kindness from bright minds
the ones who
despite it all
are still planting seeds
in this ugly world
turning fields of greed
into fields of green
and hate into lovely words
and that's sisters, mothers
girlfriends, lovers
the ones who'll
smother us in hugs
when we're down in trenches
plagued by what's above us
the ones who overcome adversity
and still standing with that weight
the women who had to wait
to be seen
cause change in the world
was running late
i want to rise for our women
move with the times for our women
because women are the ones
who lead with their vision
and i pray that i'll listen
every time she speaks
for the universe
was between her lips

you get home from a work
greeted with a smile
a hug and i'll hold you for a while
i'll ask how it's been
and you'll give me an answer
that's nothing short of true
we'll go to bed
and greet each other in the morning
rather than every blue moon
and i'll smile
knowing i can hold you again
even if it's only for a little while
you'll laugh
and i'll be reminded
how i love you so
talks of getting married
i promise
i won't ever go
you'll say thanks
for me doing a little chore
i'll say thanks
for loving me often
and loving me some more

she never knew love
served soft upon silver plates
so she learned to taste it
in sharp rusted fates
fingers traced promises
carved into skin
a hunger for warmth
in a world caving in
yet even the knives
could not sever her light
a sun breaking through
after years lost to night
she stitched up the wounds
with the threads of her will
spun gold from the pain
made the silence stand still
now love is no weapon
it hums
it remains
it softens the scars
