Chamber

Dark fantasies ride glistening moonbeams through my chamber window.
They dance their strange ballet on cobwebs in the flickering candlelight,
before they abide among the dusty tomes.
The tapestries strain to muffle the sound of my breathing,
and the frantic scratching of my quill across the dry parchment.
The moon slowly retreats behind thick clouds,
and the moonbeams are pierced by raindrops until they fade.
The raindrops do their melancholy waltz on the sill,
as lightning drives the dark from every corner of my chamber.
I smile as the thunder awakens something deep within my soul.

Somewhere outside my chamber door, a heavy chain drags the floor.

True Love

Before you, I stand
with fear of the freedom
Apprehension of the reliance
Confidence of the love
Before you, I stand with complete faith
And though I am clothed, I am completely naked.

Pages

Separate, we each keep pages within the book of faces.
Alone, we abide in the crowded tome.
As desperate loneliness grabs at us,
we see pages appear in our paths.
Your words touch my soul and mine touch your heart,
so we search the caverns for each other.
Finally we find the authors we were pursuing.
We spill out our words and piece them back together,
until we decide together that it is time to leave the book.
As we exit, the ink on our pages fades,
and we put them away, their purpose fulfilled.
Hand in hand and heart in heart, we seize the world.
You are the peanut butter to my asparagus.
Finally, I found the one who held the rest of my heart,
the piece that I missed most desperately.
At last, you found the one who would fill your soul,
the hollow you wore was finally completed.
We are each other’s destiny; the world succumbs to our odyssey.
Mountains rose to block our path to the light,
but we knocked them down with our strength, together.
You share with me your knowledge, I share with you my strength.
Just as we were about to stride into forever,
the lemon set about its heinous attack.
Together we triumphed against the dreadful onslaught,
but the battles left me scarred and broken.
You did not give up on me, but you could have.
A lesser author would have written a new page.
With the lemon conquered and the pages still dormant,
we remain attached and complete in each other
and we bring the world to its knees before us.
Together. Forever. Plus a day.

The Memory

I pull my collar up against the chilling wind
The rain tries to sting me as I walk
Rotting leaves and rain dance in my nose
And a memory lodges itself in my head
It was a dark night, storming and cold
We were driving in the rain with the radio on
In a strange town the car decided to die
But we were able to park along the curb
The shops all glowed warm in the darkness
People hurried through the rain and cold
Instead of panicking we sat in the car
Smoking cigarettes and listening to Cat
After two tapes your dad arrived
The car was fixed and home we drove
Nothing else that night stands out
But the rain and cold, music and smoke
Rattle around in my head and often rise
So I walk along the crooked sidewalk
With those smells whirling through the air
We did not last, we were too young
Of the memories we made together
It is that night that stands out the most
It seizes my mind as I walk along
And with my head down against the weather
I again let it play out as it often does
When I encounter the same cold rain
And I raise my eyes to see where my feet led me
Your teenage home stands before me
Dilapidated and broken down
But memories scream from the cracks
And I wonder where you are

Mary Ann

Mary Ann had never looked so beautiful
As the church bell tolled loudly and echoed
Reverend Cooper shuffled to his pulpit
Bible in hand, staring down at the floor
She was not nervous about the big event
Her burgundy velvet dress was spotless
The lace around the collar white and soft
Her dark curly hair was tied with a burgundy bow
Her cherub face was still plump and firm
Her polished patent-leather Mary Jane’s
Were a stark contrast to her white tights
Yes, in all her 3 years, she had never looked so beautiful
From the front of the room, she looked out
Everyone was there - mom, dad,
her big brother who teased her for being a girl,
Gram and Grampy, her aunts and uncles,
even her babysitter
All there just for her.
As Reverend Cooper began speaking
Mary Ann looked down and noticed that
she looked so sweet framed by the
off-white padding of her coffin.

My Asparagus

I would walk barefoot
Across oceans of broken glass
Through tangles of thorns
Across rooms filled with Legos.
I would stride proudly
Until my blood soaked the earth,
Even if the world turned on me
Or the dark tried to devour me
Not because I am a hero
Nor am I a masochist
It would be worth all the pain
If you were waiting with a smile
on the other side.
Then it would be worth everything.

I Found It

It was autumn when first we met
The cool of the November air
Trying to suppress the fire that grew
As time marched on, we grew ever closer
His life entwined with mine, becoming one
I had finally found my destiny
The one that God made just for me
My search was over, as was his
We finally found home.
My love for him was undying
And he told me the same
His desk is lined with photographs
Memories frozen in time
Testimony to our undying love
Many years ago, I gave him my whole heart
He still keeps it in a jar on his desk
Among the photographs.

My Lens

I wish you could see yourself
Through the lens I view you in

I yearn for you to hear
Hear the music of your exquisite laughter
Hear the sweetness of your dulcet voice
Whispering you love me

I long for you to see
See the glory of your amazing beauty
See the deepest love in your hazel eyes
Glowing pooling of joy

I ache for you to think
Think of how deeply I love you
Think about how I think of you
And how proud of you I am

I need for you to feel
Feel the love in my heart
Feel how it all belongs to you
And the way it beats your name

I wish for you to touch
Touch the smoothness of your skin
Touch the softness of your hair
A delight to my fingers

Yes, I wish you could see yourself
Through the lens of love that I have for you.

Nary a Redeeming Matter

A house is haunted not only by specters
But also by the things left unsaid and undone
Words spoken in the silence to despair
Soliloquies of love that echo in the dark
The gloom entraps memories
Ghosts of love stalk the shadows
With phantoms of unrequited deeds
Is the house truly haunted?
Or is it our vulnerabilities and repudiations?

Tin Can

From devastation and ash bloomed a small flower
Frail at first, but growing stronger with each passing minute
Our flower of love grew strong as our pages were being rewritten
I gave you my rusty tin can of a heart and you polished it
Now a gleaming heart of steel safe in your soul
I have found my home in your embrace and my forever in your eyes
As we share the storms of life and the laughter that heals
We may not emerge perfectly but always together
Time will change us as it does everything
The one thing safe from the cruel mistress of time
Is us
