The Ocean

From the shores, I look into the waves
Her offing colors become my raves
The water goes - oh so deep
My continuing gaze goes within my sleep

Yes, I hear the waves, as I watch the incoming tide
I know those dreams - as I look back in time
My memories are at times in a searching flux
The thoughts billow, like the taste of salty brine
Oh, how the ocean currents flow
Now the tide goes away, but she will return
As with everything I love, I know she is mine.

Leaving

The cab was outside, it was 1:00 a.m. The snow was falling on this chilly night.
Her face was confused her eyes meeting mine, her little hand, holding mine tight.
We had two bags that night, plus her favorite doll
I stared at Jesus, still hanging in its place in the hall

I had just one more thing to do as I took one last look at the place
My lips tremble a bit, wiping a tear from my face.
I looked down at my little girl as the cabby told me to hurry up
I finally slipped the ring from my finger and tossed it into the coffee cup.

You see, the old house once was a happy place for the 3 of us
He played with his daughter and put up with her fuss
I could stare at his smile and look into his eyes
Then slowly the signs began of little white lies
Late from work, or unscheduled appointments here and there.
Then anger and malice from my questions, “My how I dare!”

I could smell the perfume that was not my own
I could smell the sweet wine that never was in my home
I could see the glassy eyes of that love we had now long gone
I cried myself to sleep asking what the hell went wrong.

Nothing could be fixed, the fighting got worse
Pushing, shoving, our daughter’s safety now in verse
The snow is falling, and another marriage too.
This is my story, how about you?

Soulmate

There she lies - my soulmate
There, she smiles - my lover and my spouse
She now gets up - and softly strolls through our little house

My partner is always busy - helping others, here and there
Our kindred spirits- first a spark - and then a flame
My confidante through life, she is ever-changing, never the same

My true love will sometimes break down and cry
My true love will at times be in a righteous rage
My sweetheart is not always sweet, but ever instinctively kind
When she gets my attention, claiming center stage -speaking her mind

She is still my soulmate and forever will be - so beautifully human, yet - so perfectly made for me.

Children

I was a youngster once
A little lad was I
I loved to play at cowboy stuff
As we all did -in days gone by

Kids today are missing a lot
Glued to their tablets or phone
My offspring - I do worry about
They seem to face so much unknown

But when it is all said and done
No matter what we really think today
Watching our grandchildren grow
As an adult, I think there, as a child, I wish I could stay.
