Hurt

Pick apart my bare body
And witness the scars
Woven into my flesh.
Do you wonder
If you made them?
Not with your hands,
Or with a blade,
But with your absence?
With the weeks of silence
And months of lies
You fed me?
With the laughter
You gave others
But not to me?
You claim innocence,
That others have hurt you,
But did you not hurt me as well?
Is that an excuse
I should accept
With the open arms
That still have your bruises on them?

Unwanted

Your soul has exhaled
Into me, an unwanted
Abhorrence for life.

My Mothers Mother

My Mother’s Mother
I never met her,
But often in my dreams
I’ll visit her.
My mother’s mother.
I visit her grave,
Lay down flowers I’d
Imagined she liked,
Think about how young she was,
How young my mother was.
I talk to her.
When I was younger
I wanted to ask her
“Why did you leave my mother so soon?”
Now that I’m older
I want to ask her
“Did you tell her you loved her,
When you left?”
I’m certain she did.
My mother would hold me too tight,
Her tears stain my shirt too much,
Her body shook too hard with sobs
She tried to keep quiet,
For her words to not have been
Full of love and affection and kindness.
Kindness from someone who will leave you
Hurts.

Thirteen Dollars

We scrounged up
Every penny we could
The night the policemen took you.
We had thirteen dollars
For your five hundred dollar bail.

Endearment

My bones corrode
From the acidity of your endearment.
Stay away.
Keep your distance.
I am already decaying
From the affliction
Of all the tenderness I carry
For you.

Desired

I am content
With being only liked
From afar,
But I deeply wish
To be so desired
That it burns your heart.

Worm

As a child I often went fishing
And put worms on my hook.
It is my biggest regret.
I offered them shelter and then used them,
Their brains too small
To understand my betrayal
But my sorrow
And my pain
Exceeds their indifference.

Dear Mother

Dear mother,
I wish I was small again,
Like how you wish I was.
Maybe then,
You’d hold me like you used to.

Mom

“My family is very far away”
My mother confessed to me
As she cried.
I thought she meant
Her family halfway across
The world in South Korea,
And maybe a part of her had,
But her mother had died
When she was twelve
And young daughters
Never grow out of
Wanting their Mommies.

Janna

I’m sorry my mother yelled
And that it made you cry.
Come by again tomorrow
And I will protect you better.
I still want to be
Your big sister.
