Ode To Crutches

ODE TO CRUTCHES

I had a knee replacement so I needed help
I could not walk safely by myself
So, I was given two sturdy crutches
And once I got them in my clutches
I walked here and there and everywhere
With more confidence but a bit of care
With physio my knee grew stronger
Two crutches I needed no longer
So, I progressed to just using one
My recovery had begun
I exercised at home and did physio at Westmead
I was very keen to succeed
To cut a very long story short
I am very happy to report
They helped me a lot but now that I’m stronger
I do not need crutches any longer
I have a long way to go
It won’t be easy, that I know
Thank you to all the people that help me every day
With their support and encouragement I know I will be okay.

Freedom For All

FREEDOM FOR ALL

Birds can fly because they are free
The same cannot be said for me
I just want to spread my wings too
Not always an easy thing to do
I only want to be myself
And put my worries on the shelf
If you are different in any way
Some people think that’s not okay
Freedom comes in many forms
It’s hard to be free if you don’t fit the norm
People strive for freedom of speech
Sometimes that is out of reach
People want freedom to be who they are
That door is only slightly ajar
So near and yet so far
Some freedoms are not on par
I feel free on certain days
Other times freedom feels far away
There’s freedom in the poems I write
A light for me that shines so bright
When I write a song, I feel free too
Writing is what I love to do
Freedom can mean many things
Reach for the feeling that it brings.

Winter In Paris

WINTER IN PARIS

It’s winter in Paris and the streetlamps are alight
Couples walk along the Champs Elysee every night
They wander in and out of the cafes here and there
They have a cappuccino and they drink it with great flair
The artists in the daytime are painting up a storm
The cars in all the traffic are honking on their horns
At the Eiffel Tower lights brighten up the sky
People from around the world are always walking by
Paris when it’s snowing is a winter wonderland
Lovers smile and laugh while they’re walking hand in hand
You can get on board a boat and travel on the Seine
If once is not enough you can do it all again
Wintertime in Paris, there’s so much to see and do
The only problem is, it’s very hard to choose.

MY 62ND BIRTHDAY

MY 62ND BIRTHDAY
It’s my birthday and I’m in my 62nd year
I’ve shared the laughter and the tears
I love birthdays and there’s been a lot
I love all the cake so far that I have got
I did some overseas travel in my twenties
And here are some places that I went
Whilst in Paris I visited The Louvre
Just one of the things you have to do
But, there’s one thing I thought they could improve
Clear Perspex was in front of the Mona Lisa for protection
And it was hard to see her through my reflection
They just needed to employ more security guards
Because seeing Lisa clearly was very hard
Besides that, Paris is my favourite city
The lights at night are very pretty
The first time I saw the Eiffel Tower, I was in awe
I had to take a photo of what I saw
So, I laid face down on the ground
And when I turned my head around
An amazing view of the tower was found
I could see the tower through the branches of the trees
And it looked pretty good to me
When I saw the result, my mind was blown
Now that photo is the screen saver on my phone
In 1987 I did a 45-day tour of Europe which was great
And in each country their national food we ate
We went to different restaurants here and there
And we ate some really yummy fare
In Munich we went to a large beer hall
We ate pig’s trotters and sauerkraut and that’s not all
The waitress brought us litres of beer
Soon I was in really good cheer
I noticed the band had gone for a break
So, then my chance I did take
I got on the stage and I sat on the drummer’s chair
I picked up the drumsticks that were there
The drummer shouted “nein, nein” as he ran towards me
Playing his drums was not meant to be
In Greece we had moussaka, we broke plates and we danced
They served us snails and frog’s legs in France
We also had some sangria to drink
And that is just delicious I think
Travelling in Europe and Britain, I had fun along the way
I’d really love to go overseas again one day
I would like to see more of Australia too
So many things to see and do
My life has had its ups and downs
Sometimes my smile turned into a frown
It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride
But, along the way I have always tried
To be positive and optimistic and that really helps
I just strive to be myself
A good sense of humour is helpful too
Laughing is a great thing to do
Music is one of my favourite things
I love writing songs and I like to sing
I write heaps of poetry as well
Many stories I have to tell
There is inspiration everywhere
For my poetry which I love to share
This is just part of my story, there is so much more
I’m looking forward to what life has in store.

Environment Blues

ENVIRONMENT BLUES

Extra, extra have you heard the news?
all the world has got environment blues
They’re moving through the forest and ripping up the trees
Swimming in the ocean means dodging the debris
Stop treating our world like a garbage bin
Let’s make it a place worth living in
Environment blues are sweeping the land
It’s up to me and you to lend a hand
Where are the children going to play?
To make a new tomorrow we have to start today
The people of Chernobyl are nuclear shy
The faces of the children make me want to cry
I saw on the news an oil spill today
They said it was an accident but will it go away?
Recycling your rubbish would be a place to start
Don’t have to be a greenie to play your part
Just think about the animals, think about the trees
We’d have a better future in a world with harmony
So, let’s all get together it’s up to me and you
We don’t have to live with these environment blues.

Words

WORDS

My pen is poised above the page
What shall I write about today?
My creativity is flowing
There is no way of knowing
I write poetry about anything and everything
Who knows what today will bring?
I am a very emotional soul
Writing poetry makes me feel whole
Words can be happy or words can be sad
Words can bring hope to the worst day you’ve had
Words of encouragement are like a gift
Words can help your whole mood lift
Words are like magic and my pen is my wand
All I can really do is respond
To whatever is inspiring me
And then just let the words be free.

Social Media

SOCIAL MEDIA
I don’t know much about social media
I need help from an encyclopaedia
Social media has its place
I would rather talk face to face
Although, I do like texting and emailing too
They are the easiest things to do
But, you can’t get a hug via text or email
You could try but you would fail
You could even write a letter
But, hugging in person is so much better
Go out and hug someone right now
I hope you haven’t forgotten how
If you go on social media, please be kind
That is the best way I think you’ll find
Social media does have its uses
Please don’t use it for your abuses
I don’t want to hear your excuses
If you use social media, use it for good
Treat people the way you know you should
Everyone just wants to be understood
People are not made of wood.

Evening Sky

EVENING SKY

The moon and stars lit up the evening sky
A comet slowly wandered by
I gaze at the constellations everywhere
Venus here and a scorpion over there
Leo to the left, the Southern Cross to the right
All of the stars brighten up the night
The clouds are starting to roll in
The thunder is making a bit of a din
The lightning strikes and the thunder booms
The clouds have hidden the stars and the moon
I love the sound of thunder and lightning
To me it is not at all frightening
And now the rain is coming down
The storm is raging all around
The storm doesn’t last very long
The wind above is very strong
The clouds are slowly dissipating
Now I can continue concentrating
On the moon and the stars again
They have returned just like an old friend.

Merry Christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS

It’s that Christmas time of year
Everybody is of good cheer
The Christmas trees are covered with lots of tinsel and lights
There are beautiful sights everywhere at night
Santa Claus is on his way
With Rudolph out the front, leading his sleigh
It doesn’t matter where you live, whether near or far
Santa Claus will find you wherever you are
I love spending Christmas with family and friends
We wish the day would never end
Christmas Crackers will be cracked and torn
And the paper hats found inside shall be worn
There will be turkey and ham and trifle to eat
And all sorts of other yummy treats
Some people like eggnog to drink
But that is not for me I think
A shandy is the perfect drink for me
Drinking it whilst chatting with loved ones sitting under a shady tree
Have a very Merry Christmas and whatever you do, have a fun time
Now that’s the end of my Christmas rhyme.

JUSTICE

JUSTICE
Justice is for some but not for everyone
Unfortunately, the right thing is not always done
Some people are not treated very fair
There are injustices here, there, and everywhere
I don’t know why we sometimes get it wrong
Can’t we just all agree to get along?
Eventually I hope we can all sing the same song.
