Isabella

We had a fragile moment,
but it wasn't meant to last.
I let Isabella
slip into the past.

Her beauty, for an instant,
was truly mine to know,
but when autumn winds invade
the summer breeze must go.

But through the turn of seasons
I'll remember Isabella's grace;
she'll warm my winter heart
though I never saw her face.

Tunisian Winds -- Song Lyric --

Mohamed Bouazizi,
a poor man
who sold produce from a cart,
in a country bleeding from the open wound of corruption,
got up that morning
expecting to do nothing more
than support his family with the sales he could make
selling his fruits and vegetables.

He played the game like any Wall Street banker.
Buy low and sell high.
Unlike Wall Street he faced heavy regulation.
Unlike Wall Street he was physically
slapped
in the face.
Unlike Wall Street... Mohamed Buoazizi had no power.

He tried.
He tried to find some power.
He ran to the governor's office in an attempt to get his electronic scales back.
The doors were closed.
No one would listen.

"If you don't see me, I'll burn myself."
Mohamed cried.
This... was his only power.

He walked down the street.
He bought a can of gasoline.
He walked back to the governor's office
and stood in the middle of the street.

He screamed,

"How do you expect me to make a living?"

And then he set himself on fire.

Mohamed Bouazizi's last breath
was the birth
of Tunisian Winds.

Mohamed Bouazizi
was not one of life's winners.
He was only trying to support his family,
And live a decent life,

Like so many others.
But listen!
Because of Mohamed Bouazizi
something's growing.
Tunisian winds!

There's more to life
than being a winner
and so often the winners
they forget
that their world is built
on a multitude of shoulders,
a sea of blood,
an ocean of human sweat...
the shoulders, the blood, the sweat
of men and women
like Mohamed Bouazizi.

Tunisian Winds blew along the shores of the Mediterranean.
Tunisian Winds blew through Egypt and Libya, through Oman and Yemen.
Tunisian Winds blew through Morocco and Lebanon.
Tunisian Winds are blowing.
Tunisian Winds shook the banners in Zucotti Park.
Tunisian Winds are blowing.
Sometimes they seem to go still. But they are still blowing.
They just keep blowing.
Tunisian Winds
Tunisian Winds
Tunisian Winds

I Am Not My Brother's Keeper

I am not my brother's keeper
or my sister's either...
they've got their own lives to live.

But if they need my help
I'll always be there for them...
they're always welcome to all that I can give.

Of course I could make conditions...
set up harsh restrictions
and make them pay right through the nose.

But this isn't where I come from...
dogs in mangers don't have much fun...
life's river is only happy when it flows.

So I'm not my brother's keeper
or my sister's either...
they've got their own lives to live.

But if they need my help
I'll always be there for them...
they're always welcome to all that I can give.

I Need To Listen --- Song Lyric

*** Another response to the shooting in Colorado... as I try to make some kind of sense of it. Which is futile... I know... but I still have to try. ***

There's darkness all around me.
I need to find a way to gain some balance...
in this insane world...
I need to listen to some Blues.

I'm so tired of all the tragedies.
If I don't get away they're going to overwhelm me.
I feel my spirit yearning to be free...
what I need is Reggae music.

Some people have known pain
beyond my comprehension
but have found a way to live
that hate cannot destroy.
I need to hear the voices
of those who've known oppression
but who still stand up
to express their living joy.

In Boulder Colorado
a madman with a gun
for some crazy reason
left 10 people dead or bleeding.
Voices of real people
speaking plain and clear
that's what I want now...
that's what I am needing.

Some people have known pain
beyond my comprehension
but have found a way to live
that hate cannot destroy.
I need to hear the voices
of those who've known oppression
but who still stand up
to express their living joy.

There's darkness all around me.
I need to find a way to gain some balance...
in this insane world...
I need to listen to some Blues.

Manufacturing

They say manufacturing is gone from our nation.
They even point to the direction it went,
but they're wrong, manufacturing is strong,
we lead the world in manufactured consent.

For Lack of a Better World --- Song Lyric

There is silence in the still waters
where lost in the shadows our dreams lie asleep
No one dares ask why they don't waken
because the heart knows the wounds are too deep

For lack of a better world
people starve in desert heat.
For lack of a better world
kids buy crack out on the street.
TV slander, corporate lies,
hopeless anger, tortured cries,
a heart falls to defeat
For lack of a better world

For lack of a better world
some are condemned at birth.
For lack of a better world
some think they own the earth.
Crowded prisons, racial hate,
Greenhouse gases, it's too late
cause someone died today
For lack of a better world

What kind of world is this we're creatin'
where the trust of a child is battered and broken?
What kind of life can we expect
when seeds of compassion are fed with neglect?

For lack of a better world
we see foes where there should be friends
For lack of a better world
we're all losers in the end
Look around with open eyes;
it won't take long to realize
it's time to make amends
For lack of a better world

Withdrawing From Capitalism

I'm looking for ways
to withdraw from capitalism.
Perhaps you can help me.
Perhaps this is something you want to do too.

I've begun by starting a garden
and riding my bike more. It's not much, I know,
but imagine
the effect of millions doing the same.

I've stopped eating animal products. If millions joined me
industrial agriculture would fade into nothing
and we'd live in a healthier world.

I've put my money in a credit union that invests locally.
Perhaps you and I could start a cooperative business
and share all the profits with those who work with us.

The slave and the slave-holder
are caught in the same cage. Neither has freedom.
The only way to live fully is to withdraw from the circle of pain.

I'm looking for ways
to withdraw from the madness of thinking I can “own” anything.
I'm learning to think of myself as a steward
protecting the rights of unborn generations.
Perhaps you will join me.

Perhaps with our small actions
we'll reinvent our human society.

The Revelation of Your Real Behavior --- Song Lyric --- I Hear It Reggae

Every day, when a new sun rises,
you have the chance to begin again,
doesn't matter how heavy your burden...
if you're alive you can still make a plan.

Are you going to be a savior?
Or are you only going to be waiting for one?
The revelation of your real behavior
will be seen by the next setting sun.

Are you here? In this moment?
Can you hear what I'm trying to say?
Do you think the whole world needs changing?
If you think so... you've only got this moment...
right now... right here...today.

Are you going to be a savior?
Or are you only going to be waiting for one?
The revelation of your real behavior
will be seen by the next setting sun.

Are you going to be a savior?
Or are you only going to be waiting for one?
The revelation of your real behavior
will be seen by the next setting sun.

Shadow In the Night --- Song Lyric

I thought the way to win
Was to lie and take them in
Show them all a plastic face
Then disappear without a trace

Just a phantom, passing through,
The ones I touched, they never knew,
How I yearned to meet their eyes
Took so long to realize…

I’ve played too many games
Forgot the faces and their names
Saw love die and fall apart
Tried to hide my aching heart…

Like a river
that never found the sea,
like a drifter
who's never broken free.
Too long I wandered,
a shadow in the night;
I need you to see me
as my shadow reaches,
reaches for the light.

I know how it feels to fall
Where you can’t find a friend to call
All I built was built on sand,
God, I need a helping hand

Instrumental

It took years, day after day,
To break through and find my way
Took a step but wasn’t sure
Turned around and there you were.

Till the day you believed in me
I didn’t know what love could be
Now I’ve got so much to give
Fin’lly learned I don’t have to live…

Chorus

Am I the Only One

I am hearin' an old old rhythm
in my heartbeat... I know this isn't
something I feel all alone.

As I face tomorrow
I know that you are with me...
I know you hear what I'm saying
in your marrow bones.

It's from our deepest levels
that we'll have to make the changes
that we all know
must be done
to save human life on earth.

We must make these changes...
that's what I believe...

or am I the only one?
