Abby Desantis Poem
spare change
he takes shelter in a cardboard box
old newspapers for a bed
threadbare clothes rumpled and dirty
a concrete pillow for his head
picking up used cigarette butts
from the crowded littered street
dumpster diving for table scraps
searching for something to eat
huddling in an open doorway
on a cold cold winter’s night
battling to keep warm
swiftly losing the fight
asking hurried passers by
if they have change to spare
no one gives a second look
no one seems to care
a salty tear rolls down
his ruddy weathered cheek
what has happened to his life
that it became so very bleak

Abby Desantis Poem
broadway is dark
stores are closed
social distancing
is imposed
stay locked inside
shelter in place
six feet away
don’t touch your face
disinfect your hands
wash your clothes
is that a sniffle?
elbow your nose
binge on Netflix
all day long
hold back tears
try to stay strong
watch the news
who’s to blame?
pointing fingers
calling names
missing the hugs
of family and friends
wondering how
this all may end
life has changed
you know it’s temporary
we must have faith
so very scary
our new normal
since covid 19
a viral pandemic
the world has never seen
