On Jokes and Lies

I wanna see what's underneath", you say
And as we both laugh nervously you add
"Just kidding"
But is this a lie?

I wonder
Is it the look in your eyes
The smile on your face
The warmth of your voice
Or the depth of your hugs
In which I drown every time
That tell me how much I love you
Or are they just kidding

You reassure me
That I'm not annoying
That it'll be alright
That I'll find my own purpose
And that you will stay
For as long as I want you
I hope you're not kidding...

I know
How you love her
And how this will never be mine
But you give me a flower
While we sit in the grass
And the sun's in the sky
Then I remember that I was your sun
While she is the rest of the universe
You were not kidding.

"I'm in love with you", I say
And as we stare at each other's eyes I add
"Just kidding"
And this is a lie.

Mirror Minds

The mirror knows.
It shows
More than you’ll allow it
More th?n you’ll admit.
The music stops
The heart – it drops.
At least, while you are dancing
You’ve got no time to see.
You’re gazing in the distance,
Avoidant of reflections.
You catch a glimpse
And look away,
It hurts to wonder
Should you stay.
But now it’s over,
You look into your eyes all sober.
Stare well at your reflection,
It’s staring at your soul.
The doubt is like infection
And burning like a coal.
The mirror speaks
Its spiteful spell
Of worry, hate and hell.
It crawls under the skin
A sentence saying
“You won’t win.”
The mirror smiles
With evil knowledge,
It knows your mind as well as image.
“You look grotesque,
Absurd
And silly.
Give up right now.
I won’t be eerie.
You won’t be good,
Or graceful,
Or whatever,
So better
You stop now and for forever.
One may admire you,
The others just feel pity:
“The unaccomplished dancer
Who’s trying to be pretty.”
Your future won’t be dancer’s
(Oh, hers? She posted a short clip?
Well, It was the circumstances.)
So don’t you even bother
Go home and listen to your father.”
You stare and listen,
The mirror gleams
And as you are about to scream
A thought just comes to glisten.
The thought of getting up
And starting over,
Of pushing through
And getting stronger.
The thought of learning
Not to car,
To stand behind
The time you spare.
A spotlight flashes
And the music starts.
You tell yourself “Be kind,
Because the mirror is your mind.”
