The Most Leaves Fall In Autumn

Ain’t no sunshine when the sun goes down
And lately I’ve been withering in the light of day
So the dark creatures come out at night and stare at my thighs with those greedy eyes
They confuse my birthmarks with price tags
They label me weak because of the curve of my waist

But no one really sees how the soft are the strong
How the faithful become the bitter
How the most leaves fall in autumn
How greed spreads like some unconscious virus
How fire becomes ash and ember and suit

People only ever pay attention to the flames
Which are brighter when the sun goes down
When my ideals of infinity drip from the black holes of my pupils
When, again, I start believing in fairytales
And those humble tears of freedom

But every night I see those hungry eyes come closer
The forgotten, the empty castle, the typewriter
In the little red room on the little red desk with the little red chair
I sit there
Hollow

I write of worlds that appear worse than ours
I write of sorrow
I write of the bittering hatred
The bitterer liquor
How the rain and the ruin is always prettier when the sky is falling

And night is calling
And there ain’t no sunshine when the sun goes does
So I freeze in some sap of self destruction
When those dark creatures with their greedy hands come to try and take my sanity
When my ideals of infinity drip from the black holes of my pupils

And I finally see,
Why you can only ever wish upon a star

In the absence of light
