Sweet Thing

She said, "I wish you could be more like my father!"

I think I saw blue birds circling her head
and rainbows in her eyes.

I cupped my chin in my hands and smiled sweetly.

Your pa is a Nazi and your mother a Trotskyist,
and as far as I can tell you're Satan's daughter
but I will try harder
to live up to your sadomasochist tendencies.

"Daddy!" She yelled, running into my arms.
