The Sharpest Edge

The uncertainty of Winter
with its monochromatic norm.
The leery loss of color
the painful loss of warmth.

The sharpened edge of white
the transparency of cutting ice,
the indeterminate length of night
leaves man to his own device.

Even the occasional shimmer
of sunshine lends only harsh relief
though death will end life’s cycle
rebirth will soon end grief.
