Choose that golden rule
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
That's the golden rule, but is it true?
You see a world full of trouble and strife
What about a dark night, and a thief with a knife?
Do unto others as they do unto you
That's the revenge rule, in the bible too
They put it as "an eye for an eye"
You can believe that, still be a good guy.
My uncle believed in two eyes for an eye
He fought in World War One, saw many die
He showed me the holes that shells made in his arm
Was his attitude right, or does it cause harm?
Some people follow other rules, nuance they lack
If they don't like you, they go on attack
If you don't like them, they also get mad
and they'll find a way to do something bad.
Some may feel your happiness an outrage
no 'live and let live' no turning the page.
Envy and spite hidden but real
Don't ask them for empathy, don't make the appeal.
Dr. Laura, a talk show host, gave people advice
In the process she encountered people who weren't nice
She said "If people see you as having the joy they desire"
They'll turn others against you, ignite a dark fire.
She said that competitiveness is good if your dues you pay
But not the impulse to destroy people in your way
One mother wanted her daughter on the cheerleading squad
So she killed another child, not stopped by God.
Thomas Sowell said they if some resent your achievement
You may find yourself in sudden bereavement
Such jealousy is more deadly than that of wealth alone
If you rose from the bottom, some want you to sink like a stone.
So keep this in mind when you formulate a golden rule
Maybe make it silver, or tungsten, too much trust isn't cool.
