Belshazzar's Banquet
The drinking was getting out of hand,
Using vessels from the Promised Land,
Praising gods that rulers can withstand,
A pagan king gets more than he planned!
"The enemy is outside your wall!"
"No worries, our walls are very tall!
Getting drunk is no problem at all.
Medes and all, Babylon will not fall!
Bel's greater than Judah's deity!
Bel bested Him and took much booty!
Temple vessels proves this verity-
Their God shrank into obscurity."
A hand began writing on the wall!
Belshazzar's expression said it all!
For all the wise men he made the call,
They could not interpret it at all.
The Queen Mother comes to the rescue.
"This Daniel is able to tell you.
His wisdom and skill will impress you.
Summon him now for the answers to..."
Daniel was brought in before the king,
A captive from Judah now speaking:
"Recall your granfather's chastening,
In his arrogance he was boasting.
It was a test of sovereignty!
Your grandfather lacked humility.
Warned, he failed to repent completely,
And was driven from society.
You knew this yet you still failed the test!
Boasting did not turn out like you guessed.
God's judgment is now made manifest,
Your ambition will be dispossessed.
'MENE, MENE' - Your kingdom days now come to an end.
'TEKEL' - Your fitness to rule done in by sin.
'PHARSIN' - Medes and Persians attack you and win."
Babylon was felled that very night.
God's timimg was dead-on in hindsight.
Cyrus the Mede would end the Jews' plight-
Isaiah's prophecy came to light.
