She enters carefully
A journey that began so long ago
Culminating on this threshold of discovery
With the turning of the knob, an old door, of peeling paint and squeaking hinge
The house, a derelict with broken shutters
Darkness, mold and gloom,...yet a pleasantness...a sense of familiarity
Floors that creak and groan
Surveying each room...gathering thoughts, sensations, emotions
Digesting the essence of stories told
Of sitting on a grandfather's knee, and hearing of this legacy
So long harbored, like faded photographs, in her heart

A glance outside the bay window
Pushing aside the cobweb laced shade
Rubbing dirt and grime from the glass, and viewing a river in the distance
A pasture overgrown with weeds
Gopher hills the only things sprouting in the yard
Flower beds empty, except for tendrils of devil grass..
Forsaken, abandoned it is today,...but she can picture it then...
She can see the geraniums in bloom as if it were yesterday

She walks the hallowed rooms imagining the family
The father coming in from the fields
Covered with the red soil that he cherished
The mother, apron clad, gathering her children
Yes....it is over there where they would sit...
Around the table, the Bible resting on the shelf
Waiting to be read by evening light

Just as the giant oak in the yard
That shouts and tussels with the wind
With deep roots which cling so intimate with the rock below
In this journey, she clings...
To things that are deeply rooted
Family, love, life, death, that which is...that which has been..
No longer are there only sepia colored stories
Stored in a shoe box on a closet shelf...
This is a journey that continues on and on...
And like the oak...it reaches deeply...searching for constancy
These are her roots...

A Little Piece of Me

I make decisions and then I get made
I seek some exceptions yet I cannot stay
I still battle in the dark to keep the demons at bay
Yet the sunshine returns and the promise of a new day.

I make a lot of noise but does anyone hear a sound
Like a tree in the forest does it crash as it hits the ground?
Like a river stumbles on in its journey to the sea
Each of these collectively becoming a little part of me.

I make a lot of dust but it begins to settle down
I see happy faces replacing all the frowns
Life has slowly changed and with it the people I know
Like a wilted flower needs water for it to grow.

I make a little sense but then nonsense gets in my way
First it strikes my mind and then infects the things I say
I wonder of the future and if good enough will do
I’ve traveled very far, the journey is not through.

I make a little money but happiness it cannot buy
I did not really know until I gave it a try
I look to the sky and ask God why?
But the moment passes and another day goes by.

Death Comes Looking For a Rider

A large black steed charges out of the night
ethereal mount upon his back
eerie glow emanating from eyes
burning through any who cross their path.
Those who come in contact
with this spectral being
may well be the next rider upon his back.
Death known no mercy, nor shows any
all who hear the call must answer.
No where to go, no place to hide
for death knows all, sees all and hears all.
Death, part of life as we know it
waits daily for us
the road we travel leads to this end
sooner for some, later for others!
We greatly fear this unknown
for this is a journey we will not return from
though many believe to the contrary!
With the mornings sunrise
death returns to its' domain, lying in wait
for its next journey to the living world
to collect those whose time has come to an end.
