A Matter of Degree
Copyright Corinne Curcio April 27, 2008
Oil slick rainbows on asphalt streets
But no pot of gold waits at the end
Unless you make sure you don't ignore
An enemy or a friend
Abdul's drivin' his cab down the highway
With Walt Whitman sitting in the back
A Red Tailed Hawk flies over Prospect Park
While Hassidim are fashionable in black
Brooklyn, City of Churches
Where saints and sinners agree
A strong conviction
Is a benediction
It's all a matter of degree
Mermaids wandering on Surf Avenue
Call Coney Island home
But Steeplechase, The Funny Place
Was torn down ages ago
Senor Sanchez calls from his bodega
"Play Lotto - You may change your luck"
Or enter hell at the Galaxy Motel
Where crack whores will blow you for a buck
Brooklyn, City of Dreams
Where losers and winners decree
A bad-ass attitude
Ain't considered rude
It's all a matter of degree
Hopscotch girls and skateboard boys
In liberal/racist all kind of faces neighborhood
Culture and crime, if you fall or you climb
You learn to take the bad with the good
Brooklyn, City of Churches
Where saints and sinners agree
A strong conviction
Is a benediction
It's all a matter of degree
Down the river where the children play
Swimming splashing all the day
I used to remember my past
How time could have changed too fast
Down the city when there were only few lights
Now the city has turned wild like a circus night
I must have gone too long
Things change like something has gone wrong
Where those pretty people go
Where they used to wave, they used to smile at me
Where are the candy shop and the theatre?
When we would stand in line to watch the new show
I feel like being in a bunker too long
Leaving this town and hiding for nothing
I remembered my first love
Now it’s gone and I wasted my time in regret
Now it’s like a ghost town
People walking like zombies, doing their business
No trees with leaves just buildings everywhere
Just memories of beautiful past I remembered about this place
All gone….
Nothing’s left behind
No more love….
In this crowded town
All flushed….
Beneath these new faces
No more peacefulness….
When your town has turn into a circus paradise
Raindrops,
Quietly falling from skies,
Memories,
Now left far behind,
Traces,
Hidden deep in the dust,
Faces,
Empty dreams, angst and lust.
Here start all the ways
To the end of nowhere,
Here misery reigns,
But no one ever cares.
When I close my eyes,
See behind my eyelashes
Some strange city of lights -
It's revived from the ashes.
Mysterious city that I've never seen -
I call it my home, it is where I feel in.
I've found my shelter
In a far-away place,
I'll take you with me, no matter what it takes.
The city enchants me,
It tempts, captivates;
But something calls back,
As reminds I can't stay.
Without you, love,
It just can't be my home.
You think I would stay,
I would leave you alone?
Mysterious city that I've never seen -
I call it my home, it is where I feel in.
I've found my shelter
In a far-away place,
I'll take you with me, no matter what it takes.
Raindrops,
Quietly falling from skies,
Memories
That I can't leave behind,
Love
That I found one day,
Light
In the end of the way.
