THE WISDOM OF THE AGES
gently, the breeze wafted, past the me
as i stood sentinal to the grass
empty now i lay so silently
as the world swirls, and whirls on past
the birds flitter about 'pon my head
leaving marks of white and grey
i've no indignation, now, being dead
i find i'm much more unflappable today
a headstone, a marker, a name in stone
memories live on in others, oh so finite, lives
but for me i'm quite bored, and all alone
only my name in stone survives
gently , the breeze wafts past me
as i wait, for eternity
to pass.
sometimes, i wish, i had accomplished something
like, something that would have made me immortal, then
what would riches, and honor, and glory bring
that i should ever hear my name again?
to conquer, invent, to carve in stone?
to found an empire, a nation, company, or state
what, after all, would laws and society condone?
after all, the New World wouldn't forever wait
the Incas, the Mayas, the Dakotahs, too
just couldn't wait
for folks like me, or probably you
is it much to late?
namer of nations, up to me, what would i say?
statues in honor, what would i be?
still, i'm here, i found no earthly way
to live on, eternally
as me
and , if there was a way to found some earthly dynasty
i think that it wouldn't have been free
my world would have been burdened with my me
and wouldn't have been quite so free
gently, the breeze wafts past my me
and goes on and on, wild and free
of me
they say with age comes wisdom
now i'm so smart
if i could found a kingdom
i wouldn't start
i'd plant a field, raise a daughter, and a son
and try to ignore
everyone.
I sat looking out my window, the same window
I had been looking out for thirty years. It was
12”X32” and very limited as to scenery; however,
it had been my only view of the world for so long
I cherished it as an old friend. One tree, from
seedling to maturity was my focus and as I
watched I knew today was the day. June 18th and
no birds were flitting on the branches, no
insects bumped my windowpane. One leaf,
misshapen, diseased, seeming to defy gravity as
it clung resolutely to its berth. Then, before
my eyes, a gust of wind and spinning in its
turmoil, the last leaf fluttered toward the
ground. It was though that leaf was a black hole
in the fabric of life, my thoughts and vision
tunneled into the dark vortex of its flight.
Downward and darker, downward and darker, it was
a formula of finality on which I flew.
Corporeally free, I was essence, a spirit set to
dissipate upon contact with the earth. I was so close
to being free, free from prison, pain, torment,
guilt and all the dark cloaks of my existence.
Oh, how I hungered for that surcease, oh, how I
hungered for that release. The terminus of
frustration at a world that did not care and my
laughter burst from me as Mom’s epitaph shimmered
through my consciousness: “HERE LIES MANKIND: Be
there a lapidary on stone can say? Here lays
mankind for their sins to pay. Their own Mother,
they took her life, pierced her heart with their
greedy knife. Poisoned her blood and flayed her
hide, then carelessly cast her treasures aside.
Oh, they wailed and how they cried on that dark
day their Mother died. Now their reason, that’s a
honey. They took her life for some money, now
they are dead and I think that is funny”.
(continued below the greatest disease III
I thought of a way to hurt you the worst,
destroying you plan by killing him first.
To add revenge from your list to mine
I poisoned the food before they could dine.
Now its time to take your dark life,
because of you Emma, I will never be a wife.
And now I will leave you to bleed and to die
hoping now you feel guilt, and you understand why.”
As she lays there in pain, emotions not flooding
she starts to feel death slowly coming.
Regretting what it was she did that day,
wishing she would have listened to what the angle had to say.
Her body getting weaker, her eyes now hard to open
she knows she wont reach heaven without a sinless token.
As the flames grow big and surround her mind
Emma knows that there is nothing left to find.
Emma finally awoke
with a loud and sudden choke.
In a place filled up with mist
she looked down at her silky fist.
To see that she is pure once more
in her wedding dress unworn.
Then sees her groom by her side,
with his arms held open wide.
“I lost my wings to save your soul,
to fix your heart and make it whole.
Now in these clouds we are stuck”
“To me that sounds like perfect luck.
Forever we'll stay in the sky
and watch the world as it goes by”
“for I have you, and you have me”
“Why that sounds like heaven, if you ask me.”
So there they stayed, just boy and girl
watching over the giant world.
Both as happy as can be,
in there world where love is free.
So next time you see that great storm cloud
fill your lungs and scream out loud.
“Emma Lee I know your tale
so I know that love will never fail”
