Children No More

A picture hangs on my wall
it’s a photograph taken by me
of two little girls by the riverside
fishing there with me.

One is fishing with her home made rod
that her Grandpa made
the other with her little net
for which her pocket money paid.

They didn’t catch any fish that day
not even a tiddler or two
but they still had a happy day
and their picture taken too!

They’re grown up now Children no more
though one at home still stays
the other has gone away
to live her student days.

They always loved the riverside
and being there with me
but if they had a special place
it was being by the sea.

Now sometimes when I walk across a beach
my mind plays tricks on me
I can hear their little voices shout
“we’re playing in the sea!”

I see their smiling faces
happy on the beach
and little footprints in the sand
made by their tiny feet.

They’re grown up now Children no more
living life’s laughter and tears
and I wonder if they still remember
those special childhood years.

Yorkshire Days

When I was a girl we had nothing much
Ate home made cooking and played as such
No computers or gadgets in our home
But we didn’t mind and we didn’t moan

Me and my brother thought it were great
To ride on our bikes but we couldn’t be late
If we didn’t get home in time for our tea
It was a clip round the ear hole for him and me

We played outside in the freezing cold
Respected our elders and did as told
Casseroles and Stews with dumplings in a pot
When we got home from school we ate the lot

We spoke when spoken to didn’t dare not
We were grateful for everything that we got
Times were hard but we had so much fun
Playing outside till the day was done

Innocent times we shared back then
Times of old from way back when
Enjoyed ourselves laughed and cried
Right up until the Innocence died

Home Is What You Make It

My home is not only what I make it
My home is the people who surround me
My home is a place where I sleep at night, and I shouldn't be ashamed to cry
Yet every time I think of home I think of being with you
Being with what seems a happy little family who knows right from wrong
All theses things that we used to not have are improving and I want to thank you
