The Grey Brumby Horse

The Grey Brumby horse
          Don befriended him,
as he'd learnt from old Joe White.
He trained and taught and got him trim,
          and rode him with delight.
Billy Dargan, he called the grey,
Ben Hall's, Assassin's, name. .....Ben Hall was an Aussie Busranger
He often towed dead cows away, Ben never shot anyone.
ride or drive him he was game.

          Dargan was his only friend,
he fed him Mulga leaves each day.
On damper and corn meat he'd depend,
          starvation said he may.
At last he left the sad Box creek,
rode Dargan to the Fish Lagoon.
Found Joe was sick and the horses weak,
death waited to call the tune.
'Its not too bad' spoke the Leatherhead,...yappy grey bird in that
from his perch in the Gum tree high. lonesome place
The blind old man swore aloud and said,
'It's not too good, you lie! '
He arrived in time to save the day,
saved Joe and the horses too.
He shifted camp found grass I say,
what else could a bushman do.
                                    by D H Johnson.

Billy Dargin was Ben Hall’s friend who led the police to his campsite and death for Ben.

Picnic Time Aussie Style

Picnic time Aussie style

Picnic time 12 noon, is dinner time
Was had beside the river
We would grill our lamb chops
On pieces of fencing wire
Quartpot was all a quiver

Tea was cast into the old Quartpot
When the water almost boiled
And boiling tea still I can see
Tastes different I recall

Building the fire
watch the death adders ire
if you pick him up with the wood
foot long death, invisible yes
city dwellers often caught, it’s not good

If the Geegar ant gets in your pants (tiny black ant)
You will know he is there in a bit
And the Bullant one inch
Will bite like a pinch (pain)
His mates will attack,
you are it Don Johnson

Ah yes them little geegars
will bite n smite you well
and bullants come like an army
advancing into hell

If you get ants in your pants
it is no fun, the geegars are biting now
you are grabbing gripping awful ants
until you get the cow

Yes little death adder you don't see till you step on him, then both ends
head and tail strike at your foot. If you saw em first you stomped on the head.
The Brown snake the most common you will see, his head neck can flare
a bit like old Cobra, and he will kill you quicker......cheers mate.....Don

Driven Crazy

Driven Crazy in 41

You were there in forty one,
When Australia it called,
King an country it was fun,
 Adventure it enthralled.

On a hill in Syria,
 Death was to be denied,
French Foreign Legion plastered you ,
And several Aussies died.

75 mm cannon gave you shellshock,
Amongst a hundred shells,
Almost driven off your block,
Insanity you’ll tell.

And most were driven crazy,
By the ringing of the bells,
And several walking lunatics ,
Were left there in their hell.

4 days of hammering artillery,
And then you got away,
The Aussies drove off the French,
The guns went quiet today.

Kokoda found you in the green,
Quietly creeping through the hills,
Move so slow, listen though,
Jap will plonk you sure to kill.

Your eyes don’t stop a watching,
For a movement in the mist,
For if you stop a watching,
Surely, bullet kissed!

Jap scout plonks at you ,
And you’re a plonking back,
Fixed bayonet stabs too,
When death walks on the track.

Somehow you get off the first shot,
Old Tommy gun is true!
The knockdown power,
Kills Jappo dour,
Life goes on for you.

Aussie Witch Doctor

Aussie Witch Doctor
Witchdoctor could cure you of madness
With a chant and the words of his song
the Dreamtime spirits took sadness
returned you to ok , be long

Some of his people were now big old rocks
The dreamtime it told of their fate
Whistlecocking , if you failed initiation……flint castration rite
No breeding with men of this state

The bone she was pointed
man faded away
Knew he was death anointed
His death song they were a singing
To die just no other way
Faith is the root of his being
The power can lift you so strong
Witch doctor was now all seeing
Emu eggs now coming along…………….when the gidgee tree blossoms

Tribal warrior keen eyed could track a geegar……..tiny black ant
Or Porkypine who clawed the sand two ways………a special treat
You didn’t know if he was coming or going
Spear thrower would eat him today.

The Woomera gave the spear great power
Through a solid door it would slip
Tossed at least 100 yards
If it gets you, no life in your grip

Sweet Francine

Sweet Francine

Sweet Francine if you were Queen
I’d be your Knight in Armor
I’d fight for you, to self be true
You lovely little charmer.

If deadly peril crossed our path
My sword would clear the way
Fight to the death and laugh
Though death might find a way

In any fight this poor knight
Will carry yes your banner
Prove true blue, in any fight
Approve you, hope my manner.

But dying there upon the lance
I can look up and smile
The charming lady passes by
But drops her head awhile …

Don Johnson 20-may-11

And lying here with broken spear,
the lance lodged in my chest,
my blood does flow,
darkness comes n goes
my love gives her last caress...

Yes Linda Marie,,,
my words get tangled up with fiction...
of foolish knights ...
chain mail the fights...
but the lance fixes his affliction....

Under the Dying Cloud

We gathered our dead

Collected the longbows

For the Giving Tree

Had made them especially

For a company of men

For some suffered

In their death throes

Under the dying cloud

We honoured our men

In a fading sunset sky

For they turned

In to nature

And magic

And like leaves

Tumbled by

The sun bowed

The darkness came

The stars rose

The fallen men

In their death throes

Became the light in the night sky

Under the dying cloud

2012 is rushing upon us ,

will the great prophesy , be the right stuff
the great war with the Moslem's
is it coming to pass.
coming they say with a huff n a puff
or am i talking out of gas,

Armageddon is now perhaps ushered in
by great tragedies, yes begins
around the world ...we have this sign
Riots and slaughter not so divine

2012 perhaps if enough believe
depending on obsession
the war will tug at every sleeve
take all of our possessions
bullet holes will make a sieve
and death the pale rider
once more with death we have to grieve white light the decider
