Your Last Companion

When your appetite falls And your eyes require the aid of glass, Feed on this verse instead of pizza As your sunset hours lazily pass. When your love succumbs to the weight of age And you alone reminisce about a blissful past, Read these lines to cure the stinging nostalgia, For no life can the count of time outlast. And commit them to your senile memory Before your eyes completely close, So that you may recite them all the way To that Idyllic Land where poets don’t compose. And should you find there a want of verse (For I hear that there poetry is yet unsung), Lead them in reciting these lines as you learned, And wait for me, for my blood is still throbbing young.
