Premiere Contest WinnerYou taught me home

I walked into your house carrying ghosts.
Not the kind that rattle chains,
But the kind that whisper,
“You don’t deserve this.”

I had learned love as hurt,
As a silence,
As a door slammed in my face.
I thought family was a battlefield you never stopped bleeding on.

Then you opened your door.
And it wasn’t just wood and hinges.
It was warmth.
It was light spilling into places I didn’t know were dark.

You looked at me like I was not broken glass,
But a person.
Like I was not a burden,
But a guest.
Like I belonged.

You taught me things no one ever named.
That dinner could be laughter, and not a minefield.
That “How was your day?” could be a real question,
Not just a trap.
That hugs aren’t weapons.
That raised voices aren’t always danger.
That love doesn’t have to hurt.

You didn’t just give me a room.
You gave me a new definition of home.
Home isn’t walls.
It’s the sound of your voices in the morning.
It’s the way you remembered my favorite things,
It’s the silence after “We’re here for you” that felt like safety instead of threat.

And when the old ghosts whispered
“They’ll leave you too,”
You stayed.

You stayed through my panic.
Through my flinches.
Through my quiet apologies for things I didn’t do.
You stayed.

You didn’t just take me in.
You held up a mirror and showed me what love actually looks like.

And now,
When I think of family,
I don’t feel hurt.
I see open hands.
I see you.

So this is my thank you.
For every meal.
For every small kindness.
For teaching me my father’s actions were not my fault.
For showing me I am not hard to love.
For promising, without words,
That I am safe.

You gave me something
I didn’t know I’d ever have,
Not just shelter,
But roots.
Not just a house,
But a home.
And no poem I write,
No words i could say,
Could hold the weight of that gift.

But still,
I want you to know:
I carry your kindness like armor.
I carry your names like prayers.
I carry your home inside me where the ghosts can’t reach.

Thank you for staying.
Thank you for loving me whole.
Thank you for teaching me that family can mean healing.
