You Are Very Young My Love

YOU ARE VERY YOUNG MY LOVE

You were born sniffing the air of the China Seas
And I was a boy climbing trees

As you learned new school songs and odes
I was building towns and roads

You were blooming twenty when my hair was thin
I was sleeping when you scarred your skin

While you were managing, hurrying
My faltering pace became worrying

Your beauty sleeps next to my wrinkled face
You will always be second in time’s race.
