Yesterday's beauty

I joined a Scarsdale club for a walk
An old woman caught my eye, she began to talk
She told me she had been a beauty, so many years ago
I nodded politely—truth is, I wouldn’t know.

We walked by the Bronx River, where footbridges cross
She kept up the conversation, didn't matter what she'd lost
We parted with a handshake, a one-time friend.
A nice day in Westchester, but all days have to end.

Years later I rented a condo by a lake.
Talked to an old lady, polite for age's sake
She said she had been a beauty, in Italy, 1948
I was incredulous at what the years could take.

(chorus)
Yesterday's beauty
Tomorrow all gone
Let's flaunt it while we have it
Like a fifties hit song.
Load it on to YouTube
An oldie fan may see.
Yesterday’s beauty
A wistful memory.

I'd been handsome too, maybe that's why we struck that chord
But age's river carried me to the waterfall that roared
I was indignant that it wasn't just age that took it away.
Maybe an illusion, but isn't all beauty that way?

Ultimately what's inside is more important than what's out
You can waste a life, until it becomes a rout
So I smile at strangers, let the small talk start
Try to keep the good stuff living in my heart.
