Yeah, I Went In All Right
Unusual thing: a Sickness lived in There…
(The Place I spent Walpurgis Night – O, Fool!)
The kids said something rotten in the air
Infected all who’d lived there – some would drool
And some who seemed all right grew violent,
And Something Dead lived in the backyard pool…
…at any rate, that’s what the kids all said
Not one of them went near it, as a rule…
And I went, that Walpurgis, on a dare…
To prove that Frankie Bates was lying to me
When I said ‘SURE!’ he met me with a stare,
That said, ‘if you come out, we’ll all be free…’
For We All Knew that Courage BREAKS a Curse,
So, I took every Crucifix and Charm,
And on the way, I saw a big, black hearse
And prayed that none of us would come to harm…
When we went in, a blind cat greeted, yowled,
And rubbed against my shin… covered with mange…
Then scooted off! The carpet was all fouled
And something moved beneath it, whispering strange…
Words in some language that I didn’t know.
I went upstairs, and there the moon was bright.
There, shadows growled. The others slept, below…
I did not sleep ONE WINK, that whole long night…
