Notes About The Poem

Written in the Stars
We grew up together. You were three doors down.
Ordinary kids, we were, in an ordinary town.
I recall the two of us, gazing at the skies,
trying to find the truth in its starry guise,
but, we couldn't read the stars, whenever we would look,
any more than we, as preschoolers, could read a book.
An ordinary girl, you were - I, an ordinary guy -
just two kids who could never read the sky.
We were separated when we were just sixteen.
Your family moved out of state, no longer to be seen.
I kept trying to learn to read the stars in space,
though, slowly, I forgot your once familiar face.
I turned to the learned men from history,
from Newton to Sagan, but it's still a mystery,
befuddling people since days past and olden.
A song said, "We are stardust. We are golden."
I got the news today. I guess everybody dies.
I recall you, sweet neighbor, and now I realize
the truth was in the twinkle of your starry eyes.
