Wordsworth's Daffodils

Far away over meadows, fields and hills Or through oak woodland which is ever sweet; Seeking out Wordsworth's golden daffodils. Early morning, amid the dewy chills Where a dawn kissed grassland moistens the feet Far away over meadows, fields and hills. A perfumed carpet your raw sense it fills A yellow trumpeted aspect replete Seeking out Wordsworth's golden daffodils. And by the noon, as mid-day sunlight spills, I wander onward down a floral street Far away over meadows, fields and hills. By farmstead ruins and old water mills Where sheep now dwell and brightly bleat and eat, Seeking out Wordsworth's golden daffodils. So, the land where the poet whet his skills I walk at springtime in nature's elite. Far away over meadows, fields and hills Seeking out Wordsworth's golden daffodils. Alan S Jeeves

We all needed this one. Congratulations on keeping the glory of spring and daffodils alive in High definition. Doubt anyone reading this will not want to join the search, but if seeking just good poetry they will have no need to search further. Best regards David in NZ

A lovely tribute to WWs daffodils Alan, it brought back memories of my visit to Cockermouth in the lake district and I visited the house where WW lived for a time. You make this tricky form look easy, well written. Welcome to poetry soup. Tom

Thank you so much for reading and commenting Tom, and also for your warm welcome. I think W.W. can stand the test of time, as can the villanelle. (Not so myself I fear!) Kind regards, Alan

Hello my friend. Thank you for commenting on 'Wordsworth's Daffodils', you are very kind. I wrote this piece in 2001 as a tribute to W.W. As you will know it is a 20th. c. villanelle, having 10 syllables per line. I also write 19th. c. villanells (probably my favourite) with 8 sylls. I have also devised my own (maybe strange) villanelle which has only 3 syllables per line. I think that these are quite difficult to appear to make sense. I call this form a 'Trisylanelle'. I am pleased that you enjoyed this Wordsworth vill. and I am sure to offer more in the future. Kind regards, Alan.
