WINTER’S EARLY DARKNESS

Darkness comes in Winter soon
Leaving us with just the moon
It enters into windowed space
Our heart and home a dark ghostly gloom

It does not come by its own choice
But follows commands from a higher voice
Of ever- changing temporal seasons
That Nature has made for its own reasons

This darkness covers half the earth
So early it comes in winter
That even without the frosty snow
It fills all space with a dark ghostly glow

In this darkness here I am
Sitting to think alone
At day the sky was very bright
And then the warm sun shone

The fire’s out and I can feel
A cold wetness seeping in
Into this early winter dark
Now touching upon my skin

And I am all alone here
Alone with a dark grey ghost at bay
An unwanted presence without cheer
Some would surely say

Here there are pockets of cold
But I am too weak and tired
Maybe I should say too old
To get the firewood desired

Or turn the heating on
Who would have ever thought
That I would age so fast
Lazy, alone most of my life past

For I have always had
A bright star in my eye
And never once did I complain
Nor let out a sighing cry

So I shall share my aging mind
With this darkness that I find
And comfort from this blackness create
An odd joy to become a silent mate
