WILDERNESS OF WANT

I beseech the sun to undress the stars,
I invite the waves to drink up the sea,
I propose that wars heal their battle-scars,
I define our loneliness: you plus me.

My reality doesn’t match my wants,
My desires don’t matter. I must receive
What my life has produced as jokes and taunts,
What my wilderness conjures up her sleeve.

A striking, tightly wrought poem: the opening quatrain’s impossible petitions create an immediate, dreamlike scale for longing, while the final definition of loneliness lands with quiet force. The disciplined rhyme and compact eight-line form beautifully contain the tension between desire and the hard, taunting reality the speaker must endure.
