White Roses

white roses for mothers day
pink centered velvet beauties
offered with love and glee
in honor
mother
who gathers us around in arms
as wide as the world
a heart as big as the sky
and as fierce as the most angry mammal
mother
we depend on
for all things big and small
shoelaces to college applications
instructions
complications
without missing a beat
she's on it
woman, daughter, sister mother friend and lover
she never falters out loud
she is true to her bond, her word, her serious vocation
yet takes those private moments of angish aside
in private
to spare those she loves a moment of uncertainty
and pass to us this meaning of family
