Where's It Written

Where’s it written he’d like to know
That he must be a man
He likes the way things are right now
Doin’ the best he can

He turned thirteen last Friday morn’
An’ Pa gave him that look
Like he could wear a bigger hat –
As if that’s all it took.

He knew that day was comin’ soon
When he’d put on the spurs
He’d join the ranch hands at their chores
An’ fight the cockle burrs

But dang he’d miss the life he’s had –
It came an’ went too quick
He’d cleaned up Texas pretty good
When hoss was just a stick

Well, maybe there’d be good in this,
He’d shor’ give it a whirl
He knew that things was changin’ fast –
He’d noticed some cowgirls

And dang he’d miss the life he’s had
But he’d do what he could.
All he could say about them gals –
“This better shor’ be good!”
