When Words Are All I have

Sitting in my thoughtful spot
On the bench beside the lake
Between Christmas
And the New Year, listless
My soul begins to ache

Lace lichen hugs their holy limbs
And I envy every oak
Whose hearts and bones
Are strong as stone
Not easy to be broke

If only I had someone here
To sit in thought beside me
For no matter where
Look here or there
Alone is where you’ll find me

As I get up and walk away
I drag my shadow on the ground
For another year
Is lost right here
And another poem found.
