When Next a Whisper Comes
Love a shadow knows when meeting night.
Embracing all between the fall
Of sand, in single grains of flight
Or dew in the raindrops’ drizzled night.
Ten thousand flowering tongues
To speak small words of secrets failed;
Leave in lasting stain the taste of rain,
And color grow a whiter snow,
That cools all lesser pain.
My words are all I have
To keep me warm at night.
This love a heart to which
Belongs a stronger fight.
Words that fall from hearts
That float above;
You, this earth,
And all defined as love.
Speak my name in whisper
And thus to you I come,
Eyes in brazen picture,
Heart afire, captured young.
As droplets join to birth anew
To fall from lover’s tongue;
And taste awakened kiss again,
From every heart so wrung.
