When My House Burnt Down

WHEN MY HOUSE BURNT DOWN

I came home one day from town
And found my house burnt down.
There it was - a smouldering black patch:
My son had dropped a match.
I stopped and wept.
Every item of past life was gone except
A few pictures and my mother’s spoons.
I had the clothes I stood in, and two sons.

Clean - it was like tabula rasa
My life sketch was wiped with an eraser
Everything had changed. In my wrath
I saw I was on an unwanted path
I’d swapped my life for that of someone else
And assumed the fate of someone false.

Lost and desperate for a hand, I was alone.
Wilderness cry heard by hard stone.
No one really cared, their help was absent,
Unavailable, inconvenient at the moment.

All my plans were scrapped, forgot.
Life had narrowed my lot.
Now my house was charred.
My life was scarred.
What on earth
Could I
Do?
