What's In A Title - Black Cat Moan

Contest: Black Cat Moan by Glenn Hughes
Sponsor: Robert James Liguori
Date: July 7th 2026

A title can be the make or break
On if a work is read.
If it sparks some intrigue
Then ideas fill your head.

It draws your eyes and pulls you in
To see what can be found,
Just like Glenn Hughes song, "Black Cat Moan"
Has expressions quite profound.

He's on an inward journey of recovery,
Some soul and spiritual healing.
The title alone - "Black Cat Moan"
Reveals the pain he's feeling!

A title can be a prècis of the work
Or it can give readers a clue.
It aids interpretation.
Though that's up to me and you.

So as I write my poems
I'll give some thoughtful time
To create a title that might give away
The reason for the rhyme.

It's so nice how you made your poem be a reflection of this song. I have yet to even hear it so that I can think what to write for the contest

I haven't heard the song either Andrea. I looked up the lyrics and still confused I researched what the song was about. With such an intriguing title I also looked at what it meant. And with only three words, the artist has revealed something very deep. Quite impressive! It got me thinking about how important titles are to creative works, so that is the angle I went for. I'm not familiar with Glenn Hughes. So this one was a challenge. :-D

Thanks Alison. I wasn't sure about how to approach it. But because the title is striking it got me thinking about what is in a title. A title is just as important as the poem/song/story. :-D
