We Will Pay You to be Scary

the old lady had a haggardly look, she was wrinkled now
her face was almost as wrinkled as her neck and her hands
her crow was older too, this would probably be his last winter
they were ready to “go”, they had said their goodbyes

she was tired of being here; her friends had all gone before her
her days were same-oh, same-oh, life was not lively or fun
Sam, her crow, was her only friend.
Every night she prayed that she would go before Sam

Then she realized that would leave Sam without food or water.
So maybe they should go together.
The week before Halloween she was asked to dress as a witch.
We will pay you to sit in a rocking chair and be scary.

She wondered if she would like that.
She had not been especially fond of children.
But the money was good.
She decided to do it if Sam could come too.

The old witch and Sam were the “hit” of the haunted porch.
That was ten years ago; they are still going strong.
Earning money every year, having a terrific time doing it.
This little job turned their worlds around.
