Wasted Words
After the fist-shaking and shouts have ended,
After your acidic tongue has ceased working,
After vile accusations have been suspended,
Nothing can be changed.
After you vent what you have vented before,
After your crimson face regains its right color,
After you’ve said things I’m bound to ignore,
Nothing can be changed.
After you’ve wounded me again to the quick,
After you have made me lose my self-esteem,
After you’ve applied every malevolent trick,
Nothing can be changed.
How can that be, given your wretched tantrum?
How is it possible your words need not be said?
The answer is, you’ve wasted another anthem
For as you should know, I am a long time dead.
"The dead do not hurt you; only the living do."
—Tess Gerritsen, The Sinner
