Walking To School

I watch the children walk to school
With parents at their sides,
Engaged in conversation
As they march with matching strides.

But when those offspring say goodbye
And leave their parents’ realm,
They step into a world with
Someone different at the helm.

They’ll be exposed to rules and thoughts
Unlike the ones they know,
Contributing to who they’ll be
As they mature and grow.

That morning walk is bittersweet
For it’s the very start
Of heading towards the future
When their paths will have to part.

You have captured a moment of both dread and excitement, experienced by millions of parents. Amazingly well done Ilene. A FAV for me!.....pat

During my years of teaching I often wondering what was passing through the children's minds, especially during the first days of the scholastic year. Luckily most of them settle down quite quickly. Your lovely poem brought back some very special memories, Ilene! Regards // paul

A New York state of mind. Is always what we find. Intertwined in each new poem. Which has defined your life at home.

There's room for optimism after all, if this is how you feel, Ilene. All I ever read about public schools these days (in Chicago, anyway) is failed outcomes, drugs, and violence. Best wishes, Gershon

wow, such a thoughtful one. It's so true. Our parents lose more and more influence over us as we see more and more of the world through our own eyes.

It is bittersweet though an exciting day for the kids, at least for a little while until they realize that school lasts forever it seems. : ) This was fun Ilene
