Waiting In the Shadows

Alone in the shadows of time I wait,
As cold as the midnight fog.
Always near, yet always shunned;
Nobody cares to call me a friend.
I wait in the shadows, alone.

Why do you hate me and flee from my face,
And blame me for all of your woes?
I am but faithfully doing my job.
Obedient, I wait for the Master's command.
I wait in the shadows, alone.

Why curse me, O man, so vehemently
For the duties I duly perform?
If you had performed as obediently,
My lonely existence would never have been.
I wait in the shadows, alone.

So kindly you speak of the goodness of life,
While me you cruelly malign.
But can you depend on life's warm, fickle hand
When I touch with this cold hand of mine?
I wait in the shadows, alone.

My name is Death, and I promise you rest,
So why do you tremble and quake?
Why do you dread my appearance, my friend,
When I wait at your side every day?
I wait in the shadows, alone.

Superlatives fail me! Very well crafted, building to the revelation of the speakers identity. I cannot believe there are no comments posted for this, shame on them.
