Vignette- the Harbinger

On a slave ship Phillis came
adpoting her owner's name,
learning English & latin brought her fame-
Serfdom did not become her curse
Dedicating words to President George in verse.

Tribute to Philli Whealtley(1753-84) considered to be the first successful black poet writing in 
English.Her anthology 'Poems on Various subjects' published London 1773

Another great little poem giving us tidbits of knowledge. I sure hope all these interesting characters from the past will stay in my mind,Brian, so that I may recognize their names should those names ever come up for me in future studies. btw, I believe you meant her in line 2. LUv, Andrea
