Notes About The Poem

Venice, Italy, Finding your Own Strada

                                   12/15/2023

“Each of us must choose his own path or way.”

                           Or

“ Ognuono di nuo deve scegliere la propria strada.”

I dreamt I awakened, a bit sleepily, at dawn in Venice.
Alas, if it were only my actual, vivid reality.
But one’s so confined by time and mortality.

To be sure, I’d ride in a glorious gondola.
Dinner, later, by her softest, loving candlelight.
Then walk her streets, bathed in Venetian moonlight.

“0 Sole Mio”, the smiling, joyful, accordionist would play.
Spellbound, I, by the deepenining, welcoming shadows .
Back in my room, so moved by the power of Dante’s
        poetry from his ~“Cantos.”

Dedicated to my late Uncle Pietro! Thank you for the fun and
love you brought into our family. And you were the only man
who had the grace to do the Vienese waltz with me in full ball
gown and you in full tails..
Pure magic you and joy you were!
You were magnificent! Thank you, beloved one! You also were
         Elena’s godfather.! Gracias.

Hi Sara! I wish I had been to Italy in my life, but I never did. Anyway, uncle Pietro was Italy’s gifts to my life as you saw He really was a good dancer. You could do any kind of dance.. I’m referring her to ballroom dancing, and he was so late on his feet. You felt like you were lying on clouds or something. Thank you for visiting my site and I so enjoy your poetry. Pangie

Your uncle Pietro certainly left a lasting positive impression on you, Pangie! I just had to pay this poem a visit after reading your reply to my comment. That picture of Venice is beautiful; I was there for the 3rd time this summer (but my 1st time on a gondola). The tide was high, and it was fun splashing barefooted in St Mark's square. ~ Enjoy the rest of the weekend..and May you have a joyous & blessed Christmas // paul

Tom! My pietry mentor in the UK, just got back grom Venice. Like you, he loved the beauty.. i have only seen it in movies! Not quite the same,. I am glad you had a chance to go.. I added something to the dedication, which I totally forgot. Unclepietru was Elea’s godfather, italy”s loss was our gain! His cooking was from heaven, and he also grew grapes, and made his own wine. on top of that like 15 hours a day. Hardly do that anymore as you know.. Thank you for Two dollars per day commenting!
