Notes About The Poem
Written for VE Day - 8th May 2025 - Eighty Years On

VE Day Eighty Years On

Exactly eighty years ago today Came the valiant, victorious VE Day We celebrate in commemoration Of the day that brought each our salvation. Amid the joy there is also sorrow For those who never saw a tomorrow They had bravely fought for each of our sakes Staring dangerous missions in the face. Let's join together in raucous hip-hop Dancing till midnight all around the clock In thanks to all who died, those that survived For they are the reason we are alive.

Beautiful tribute Beryl! I am blessed with my middle name 'Jo' for my dad's best friend and cousin Joe who gave it all in WWII. I have a box to fill with small treasures commemorating his precious sacrifice. He never was able to marry nor have children, so I may be the only living element of him living on earth by carrying his name tucked in my own. We should certainly remember these valiant ones who left freedom in their wake though it cost them so much!

Thank you Bj, we also have mementos from WWII that my father-in-law left behind. My own father sadly never left us any mementos behind from the war days. Also he didn’t talk about his efforts during the war, all we know is that he served in the RAF… Beryl

Timely tribute, what with the old alliances shred to sawdust now.

Thank you Gershon, there are some aged comrades left to whom we can offer respect in appreciation of what they did during the dark days of war… Beryl

A special and timely write, Beryl. It seems that not only are we losing the remaining ‘few’ but we’re getting rather low on people who give a fig. Hope your celebrations/commemorations are well attended and ‘fun’ to prove me at least a little bit wrong. Terry

Thank you Terry. Sadly that’s how things are going, with those who do give a fig, others must keep the remembrance flowing. If you are celebrating, enjoy the commemorations too… Beryl

Excellent ink Beryl I especially was moved by the second stanza and love the uplifting ending I'm so glad there are so many celebrations going on Beryl, and its lovely to see the King and Queen leading the way. we must never forget those who gave their lives and the surviving veterans. I'm going to a VE day celebration on Saturday afternoon. hugs Jan x

Thank you Jan, we’re celebrating in the lounge of our apartment block. It’s all done up with flags and there’s a buffet being put on, music and I guess some will be dancing, high on refreshments of course. Enjoy your celebration on Saturday. Hugs returned, Beryl x
