Useless Things

if on a crowded street we meet
filled with hurrying, shopping throngs
would you greet me cordially
or turn your back on me an run

would you smile and say hello
or look through me as if I'm not there
does it leave and empty feeling
hanging about you in the air

would we go for coffee
and speak of useless things
seeing into the future
talking of what it will bring
