Upside Down And Still Yours
Slide down in the cockpit, belt strapped across my chest,
Engine talkin to me like it knows me best,
Boys line up beside me, chrome burnin' in the sun,
Pit crew nods me forward, yeah it is time to run,
Set her picture on the dash where I can catch that smile,
Been grindin' for this moment, mile after mile,
I know every turn on this track like a prayer,
Every win, every close call, I have left pieces of me there,
Flag lifts, heart racin', whole world holdin tight,
When it drops, I am gone, ridin' lightning through the night,
G force hits hard, but it is a feelin I know,
I am locked in, leaned in, baby watch me go,
I am smooth through the straightaway, holdin tight to the line,
Eyes cut to the mirrors, everything feelin fine,
Got the rhythm in the wheel, got the track in my bones,
Engines howlin' round me like a pack of wolves grown,
Then a shadow creeps up on me from the back of the field,
He is pushin' way too hard, lookin hungry for the steal,
He dives in too close, tries to take the inside,
Clips my bumper just enough to send me into the slide,
World goes sideways, tarmac where the sky should be,
Black asphalt flashin' up where clouds used to be,
I am spinnin', flippin', weightless in the roar and the sound,
Then I slam hard, upside down, roll cage holdin me to the ground,
Hangin' there in the wreckage, I picture her in the stands,
See her shootin' to her feet with those trembling hands,
Shock on her face like the whole world split,
And God knows I have put her through too much of it,
She is runnin' now, I can feel it in my bones,
Soft footed like always, barely makin a tone,
Years of morning miles taught her how to fly,
But today she is runnin' on fear, not the sky,
I can almost hear her breath as she bolts for the gate,
See her slam into the chain link, screamin' my name at fate,
Tryin to climb, tryin to fight, tryin to break through,
But they hold her back, they do not know I am still pullin' through,
They pull me from the wreck, lay me flat on the board,
Neck brace tight, but I am thankin' the Lord,
I lift my hand to the crowd, let 'em know I am alright,
And I see her fall apart when she catches that sight,
She drops back in the arms of the crew,
All that panic drainin' out like a storm rollin' through,
They wheel me out slow, and she is right there again,
Eyes red, breath shakin', but she is holdin my hand,
They load us in the ambulance, doors closin' tight,
She kisses my cheek like she almost lost me tonight,
Then she whispers soft, but it cuts like a blade,
Baby, we gotta talk about the choices we have made,
I have been a speed demon since I was barely a kid,
Chasin' that high in everything I did,
Thought nothin beat the thunder of a car hittin' stride,
Thought the only place I felt alive was on that ride,
But holdin your hand here in this ambulance light,
Baby, the biggest rush I ever hit was the night
I fell for you, that was the real freefall,
And I do not know how to quit racin',
But I know I cannot lose you at all,
The chases, the races, the beat up look on our faces,
We keep holdin on through all these wild places,
Yeah, we need each other just to make it through our choices,
Stand together, raise our voices, love strong, love strong,
Through the crashes and the scars and the nights that feel too long,
Baby, you are the reason that I am tryin to carry on,
We bend, we break, but somehow we still belong,
Holdin tight, ridin' on, love strong, love strong,
