Until There are None

You wake with a fright,
it’s a nightmare again;
but this time I’m there
to see your eyes open.

I now take your hand as
fear drains from your face;
you’re here with me
in a much safer place.

When our eyes meet,
my hand you squeeze;
you move close and say,
"Just hold me please."

Your warm body shakes
as I hold you so tight;
my prayer is to God
please, take away this fright.

I feel your heart beat
and I caress your back;
kisses on your neck
in night’s sea of black.

The healing is slow,
still leaving some scars;
but when I look in your eyes
you have come so far.

Our love has grown
yet because of it all;
you wrestle with the demons
and sometimes there’s a wall.

I know it’s not the present
we’ll deal with that as it comes;
chasing nightmares together
until there are none.

Hi Darlene, very true. We've been through this many times, but over the years they happen with decreasing frequency thankfully. Making new memories to "overwrite" or displace the bad has helped, and that comes with love and trust. Have a great week! Ron
