Unfinished

I have learned my lesson
It gets harder to believe
You give me the comfort
Of perfect sympathy
Lying on the hillside
Carve your name in me
Expect the same tomorrow
Perfect mediocrity

God, you have my attention
Was it something I said?
"Wasn't the best book I ever read."
Why, Jesus Christ
Was it something I wrote?
You're looking down, but on a better note--

You've made a believer out of me
As far as the eye can see
But beauty is in the eyes of beholders
Who can hold me till I loathe the words

I've walked this path forever
And haven't learned a thing

--I'm stuck, suggestions welcome--
