Under My School Desk

Under my school desk I crouched waiting for a brilliant light to fill the sky, the brightest ever seen, while our teacher, a Catholic nun, looked over the class, calm and serene. A little girl glanced over and giggled to me, "Isn't this fun!" as she knelt on the tile. I returned a nervous grin and said, "Whoopie!" I thought the last thing I'd see would be her smile. . for public domain

Growing up in southern california, we had earthquake drills that involved getting under our desks. Then, in North Alabama, it was tornado drills. Now, they send everyone home a day in advance if there's a even a threat of weather. I don't remember the nuclear drills, but who knows...

I think this happened around 1962 and I lived life for years believing the world could vanish at any minute. Now, at 70 years old, I don't really care so much. :-)
