Unavoidable

I get that look again, my head falls soft to the side,
like gravity knows your name and pulls me where I can’t hide.
My eyes spill open, drowning slow in something too true,
my pupils bloom wide black just trying to hold all of you.

The colour drains quiet, like the world’s been erased,
like nothing exists but the shape of your face.
Then I jolt back hard when reality claws through,
remembering this is a line I’m not meant to pursue.

But I don’t just love you, I love how you make me feel,
like time folds in half and nothing else can be real.
Like every sharp edge in life suddenly smooths into air,
like I could break into pieces and you’d still find me there.

I love how you laugh at the things that are not even funny,
like my worst words still land soft, still land honey.
And the way you go quiet, like you’re scared to speak first,
then whisper just a while, like you’re dying of thirst.

And I always come back, I’m weak for that sound,
for the way you unravel when I’m not around.
Because I see it, that ache you try hard to replace,
that look like you’re lost when I step out of place.

You curl into me, your head tucked under my skin,
like you’re searching for something you’ve always kept within.
Your hands shake slightly, but you pretend that they don’t,
like you’re holding on tighter than you’re willing to admit you won’t.

And you think any space is safe if I’m in the room,
like I could hold back the dark, hold off the doom.
And maybe I can, because I feel it now too,
this terrifying truth, I’m just as gone into you.

I really do love you, there’s no softer way to say it,
it’s carved into my bones and I don’t know how to unmake it.
I don’t think I’ll learn how to breathe if you leave,
like my lungs only work when you’re something I can believe.

But time is a thief, and it eats what we swore we’d restore,
and I’ve already changed more than I was before.
So I know one day this will fade, or I’ll force it to,
but right now, there’s nothing in me that isn’t you.
