Two Who Laughed

They smirked and made fun of her.
None of them could relate.
They had never been there.
Could not imagine being homeless or on drugs.

They laughed at her distress.
Teased her with their left over sandwiches.
They thought they were being “cute”.
They were being themselves, ignorant of anyone else’s feelings.

Along came another homeless woman.
She saw the struggle, and she stopped to help.
She brought out a sandwich, and a bottle of water.
She did not have much, but what she did have, she shared.

They laughed harder now.
Two of the dirty, grimy things.
Two who laughed ended up on the streets a few years later.
Understanding now why their gloating and bullying was mean.
