Notes About The Poem

5/2/2026 for All About Family Poetry Contest sponsored by Len Gasun

Two Families

In our first family, we all grow up.
Sometimes, a heavy price is paid,
Maybe, somebody doesn't show up,
but, in this family we're partly made.
Then one day, when we find a mate,
it's our chance to fashion something new,
and so, we hope, then, to create
a family with love that's true.
From the first, we take love we retain,
as in the second, we try again.

David, I love your interesting approach to the topic! There is a lot of truth to what you said. (One might even include a third family for grandkids, but I am nowhere near that yet so don't personally know.) Congratulations on a top-10 win with this!! Blessings and very best, Bartholomew

Yes, absolutely! The third family! I'm waiting for that. Sometimes, I like to think about even earlier families too, like the ones my parents and their parents grew up in. It's a long strange generational progression.
