Notes About The Poem

Two Blocks of Chocolate

Together they departed, the fifty four year old man
and his twenty nine year old son
The destination a seven hour drive
 to a tiny country town
To celebrate a reunion at a school
the old man had attended when quite young

And so for several hours they mingled
in the old familiar classrooms
Old schoolmates sharing
what may be regarded as a tall story
Some tales tinged with sadness
others, with self opinionated glory

The reunion now over they all departed for the pub
where the son had spent many hours
waiting for the Old Man to emerge
Long nights of feeling miserable, hungry and cold
he could no longer resist an irritating urge
Necessity required that he enter into the bar
front the old man to get some money for some grub
Two shillings from the father he was given
To buy a block of chocolate that's the rub

But finally after waiting for so many years
both father and son joined together drinking at the bar
For an hour or two engaged in convivial conversation
with family and friends from both near and far

Old Man decided he was hungry, approached the son
said it's time to go and eat and we must both absent
Son with sudden reflex action, his hand moved like a rocket
dived into his pocket, pulled out coin, value twenty cent
To his father he responded, here go buy yourself
a block of chocolate that's your grub
Father now in less than happy state, sarcastically suggested
to the next event that we go you had better smarten up that's the rub

At the dance in the hall
on that same infamous night
the son was approached
And the story many times was repeated with delight

And for quite some years after
where the story spread like wildfire,
in that tiny country town
How the son had put one over his old man
it was remembered with renown

So thirty odd years later
now without the Old Man
No longer a drinker, son returned
to the venue of the story from the pub
He reconnected with an elder from that little town,
a greeting with an immediate remark
Remember the time when you gave your Old Man
twenty cents to go and buy some grub
