TRUE LOVE

5
I do not ask for toys or sweets,
Or skirts with—watcha call it?—pleats,
I do not want this thing or other,
I want a sister or a brother.

15
She sprained her arm, she bruised her head.
I hear her crying in her bed.
It was my bike she broke. No matter,
I want my sister to get better.

30
She married her beloved Rob.
She has a kid, a part-time job.
She seems so happy, and I’m hoping
Her future stays forever open.

50
She stays afloat, she pays her bills,
She fights her wrinkles and her ills.
I know her life cannot be easy.
I only want a little visit.

70
I ask “How long from now?” as if
The doc can give me years to live.
Too soon, when I am ash and embers,
I want my sister to remember…
